New York: Minister of State Ahmed Attaf Meets AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf

The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, met with the Chairperson of the African Union (African Union) Commission, Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, on the sidelines of his participation in the proceedings of the high-level segment of the Eighty-First Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the situation prevailing on the African continent, particularly in the Sahel-Saharan region, Libya, Western Sahara, Sudan, and South Sudan.

On this occasion, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission commended the wisdom of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, praising in particular the spirit of solidarity he demonstrates towards the Sahel region and the initiatives launched by Algeria toward the countries of the region to contribute to their development efforts and support continental endeavors aimed at reinforcing peace, security, stability, and development across the continent.

For his part, the Minister of State emphasized the necessity of addressing the root causes of the crises facing the continent and rejecting foreign interventions in African affairs.

In this regard, agreement was reached on the need to operationalize African Union mechanisms with a view to promoting African solutions to African problems in accordance with the principles and directions of the African Union, especially in light of the compounding threats posed by terrorism and cross-border crime.
