Minister of State Ahmed Attaf Receives AU Peace and Security Council Delegation as Algeria Hosts "Africa Amnesty Month"

The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, received this morning, September 14, 2026, a delegation from the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council, headed by the Ambassador of the Republic of Benin, whose country holds the Council's rotating presidency for the month of September.

This visit comes within the framework of observing the 10th edition of "Africa Amnesty Month," hosted by Algeria on September 14 and 15, 2026, under the theme: "Advancing the Silencing the Guns Initiative and Consolidating Sustainable Peace Through the Exchange of Best Practices in Small Arms and Light Weapons Control and Demining Actions."

On this occasion, Mr. Ahmed Attaf welcomed the delegation of the Peace and Security Council, reiterating Algeria's steadfast commitment to maintaining its active contribution to continental efforts aimed at establishing the pillars of peace, security, and stability across the African continent.

In this context, the Minister emphasized the necessity of strengthening African Union mechanisms for conflict and crisis prevention and resolution by addressing their root causes in accordance with a comprehensive and proactive approach that ensures African solutions are crafted for African problems, free from foreign interventions that could exacerbate conditions and contribute to arming conflicting parties.

For his part, the Ambassador of the Republic of Benin to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mr. Hervé Dadjedji Djokpe, speaking on behalf of the members of the Peace and Security Council, expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to Algeria for hosting this vital continental event, which aims to anchor the values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence across the African continent by encouraging the surrender of illicitly owned weapons and prioritizing dialogue and reconciliation over violence.

Concluding the meeting, the Minister wished the members of the delegation a pleasant stay in Algeria, expressing his wishes for the success of the event's proceedings and hoping they yield tangible outcomes that contribute to curbing the spread of weapons and reinforcing demining efforts to eliminate landmines inherited from the colonial era from the African continent once and for all.
