State Secretary Sofiane Chaib Participates in the 41st Ordinary Session of the APRM Focal Points Committee

The Secretary of State to the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaib, participated today, Wednesday, September 16, 2026, via videoconference, in the proceedings of the 41st Ordinary Session of the Focal Points Committee of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), which was dedicated to following up on the implementation of the recommendations emanating from the 35th Forum of Heads of State and Government of the Mechanism, held in Addis Ababa on February 13, 2026.

In this context, the meeting's agenda covered the endorsement of the outcomes of the 40th session of the Focal Points Committee, which was held under Algeria's chairmanship in January 2026, setting the priorities of the current year's action plan within the framework of executing the Mechanism's tasks. Emphasis was placed on the necessity of translating adopted decisions into practical measures and strengthening governance evaluation mechanisms in member states, as this lies at the core of the Mechanism's fundamental mandate to promote good governance across the continent.

In his address on this occasion, the Secretary of State reaffirmed Algeria's commitment—in its capacity as a founding country and member of the Mechanism's current Presidential Troika—to continuing its contribution to promoting the principles of the APRM and achieving its goals, supporting the execution of its strategic plan, and enhancing the performance effectiveness of the continental Secretariat in carrying out its mandate, in alignment with the directions and goals of the African Union's Agenda 2063.

Furthermore, on the occasion of the meeting's adoption of the report concerning the Framework of Reference for the African Early Warning and Conflict Prevention Mechanism—which was approved by the African Union Peace and Security Council during this past August under Algeria's presidency—the Secretary of State commended the achievements attained in enhancing the Mechanism's contribution to conflict prevention and addressing the nexus between governance, stability, and sustainable peace. He called for the continuation of the process to operationalize this initiative, which will be the subject of a technical workshop organized by the Mechanism's continental Secretariat in Algeria over the coming months.

Additionally, the APRM Focal Points Committee adopted a number of thematic reports pertaining to the evaluation of the Mechanism's performance and the reinforcement of African youth's role in the field of governance, alongside monitoring the process of materializing the initiative to establish the African Credit Rating Agency, as part of continental efforts aimed at strengthening Africa's economic and financial resilience.
