Madrid: Foreign Ministry Secretary-General Lounes Magramane Co-Chairs Session of Algerian-Spanish Political Consultations with His Spanish Counterpart

The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lounes Magramane, co-chaired today, Monday, September 28, in the Spanish capital, Madrid, alongside his Spanish counterpart, State Secretary for Foreign and Global Affairs, Mr. Diego Martínez Belío, the proceedings of the session of Algerian-Spanish political consultations.

The proceedings of this session provided an opportunity to review the state of Algerian-Spanish relations across various fields, which have received a strong impetus in line with the positive dynamic marking bilateral ties between the two countries recently. This dynamic was reflected in the recent visit to Algeria, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, by the President of the Spanish Government, Mr. Pedro Sánchez, on July 20, 2026, and the significant decisions that emerged therefrom aimed at diversifying areas of cooperation between the two nations. It also builds upon the meeting that brought together the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, and Spanish Foreign Minister Mr. José Manuel Albares, on the sidelines of the high-level segment proceedings of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The two sides further discussed ongoing preparations for the 8th session of the Algerian-Spanish High-Level Meeting, the proceedings of which will convene in Madrid in the coming weeks. Both parties emphasized that this important bilateral milestone will serve as an opportunity to assess various aspects of cooperation between the two countries and map out new, promising prospects for bilateral partnership across multiple fields. Draft bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding currently under review, scheduled to be signed during this mechanism's convening, were also presented.

On the economic front, both sides expressed satisfaction with the level of bilateral trade, which has witnessed a qualitative leap during the recent period. They also stressed the importance of encouraging productive investment in Algeria, given the immense potentials and promising opportunities the country boasts, alongside the privileges granted to foreign companies by the new investment law. Additionally, the discussions touched upon cooperation relations between Algeria and the European Union, as well as ways to reactivate this partnership.

The two parties further exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern amid current international developments in the Middle East and their repercussions on international peace, security, and the global economy. Updates concerning the Palestinian cause, the question of Western Sahara, the situation in the Saharan Sahel region and Libya, as well as the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, were also addressed.

At the conclusion of the consultations, the two parties expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the talks and voiced their eagerness to continue joint work and intensify coordination, thereby opening broader horizons for bilateral cooperation.
